Held in conjunction with the 2019 Fayette County Fair.
RULES AND REGULATIONS:
1. Hay must be produced by exhibitor and must be grown in Fayette and adjoining counties and produced in the Spring and Summer of 2019.
2. Judging of hay will be Wednesday afternoon, August 28, 2019 at 1:00 p.m., with a meeting and program at 7:00 p.m. at the Schulenburg Expo Center.
3. To enter, an exhibitor must:
a. Deliver one bale of hay for each entry to one of the following stations: Farmer’s Co-op or Bumper Crop Texas LLC, in Schulenburg; La Grange Farm & Ranch; M-G Farm Service Center in Weimar; or Mica Soil Service, Flatonia.
b. Pay a $10.00 entry fee for each entry at the time of delivery of hay to collecting station.
c. Deliver the entry no later than Saturday, August 10, 2019.
d. Large round bales – pay entry fee at one of the above stations and supply a charge of hay from the round bale to serve as a sample for testing and judging.
e. In the event a sample from a round bale is named Champion, the round bale must be furnished for the auction.
f. All round bale exhibitors must furnish one small square bale of hay of comparable kind and quality for the auction.
4. All hay will become the property of the Schulenburg Young Farmers and will be sold for the benefit of this organization. Auction will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at approximately 8:00 p.m. at the new livestock barn.
5. The Schulenburg Young Farmers will take a sample of each bale of hay to the hay testing laboratory for analysis. Entry fee covers cost. Samples will be tested by Texas A & M University.
6. All hay will be judged on a classification basis. Hay will be judged on the following physical characteristics: a) Maturity – 40% b) Texture – 20% c) Leafiness – 10% d) Freedom from excess foreign material – 20% e) Color – 10% and on protein content. Contact #: 979-561-6320 26 267
7. The following classes have been set up:
Class 1 – Coastal
Class 2 – Other Hybrid Bermudagrasses
Class 3 – Other Perennialgrasses
Class 4 – Mixed Grasses
Class 5 – Sorghums, including Johnsongrass, Sorghum, Sudangrass and Hybrids
Class 6 – Oats, Ryegrass and Other Winter Annual Grasses Class 7 – Alfalfa, Other Legumes and Legume-Grass Mixtures
8. The Young Farmer Executive Committee has the authority to add or delete any class after all entries have been made.
9. A Grand Champion Bale of Hay will also be selected and awarded a trophy and one thousand lbs. of Fertilizer donated by Farmers Co-op of Schulenburg or La Grange Farm & Ranch of La Grange, Texas.
10. A Reserve Champion Bale of Hay will also be selected from the above classes and the owner will be awarded a trophy and 1 thousand lbs. of fertilizer donated by Bumper Crop Texas LLC. 11. Trophies will be awarded to each class winner as outlined in Rule 7.

13. Results of tests will be provided for the person making the entry. The test will include the following information: Crude Protein, Digestible Protein, Heat Damaged Protein, Available Protein, TDN, and minerals content. They can perform this test on all Bermudagrasses, Legumes, Small Grains, and Bahiagrasses. Hay grazers, Klein, and other Bluestems cannot have this test done, but the test that will be run on these grasses will include Crude Protein, Digestible Protein, Phosphorus, and Calcium Content.
